New Bill Could Ban Taxpayer-Funded Abortion Travel

Remember when Austin and San Antonio pledged $600,000 combined to fund abortion travel with taxpayer money? A new bill filed by lawmakers could stop these cities from violating Texas Pro-Life protections.

Since the overturning of Roe v. Wade, anti-Life activists created new strategies to continue killing preborn babies in Texas despite state law. Liberal cities like Austin and San Antonio added to these deadly efforts, dedicating hundreds of thousands of taxpayer dollars to abortion groups. Austin City Council even handed $100,000 to an organization that sends teenagers out of state for abortions.

However, that could all change this year.

Senator Donna Campbell (R-New Braunfels) and Representative Candy Noble (R-Lucas), filed the Texas Right to Life Priority Bills to ban local governments from funding abortion expenses.

Starting January 14, state lawmakers will have only 140 days to pass new policies before the legislative session ends and aren’t scheduled to convene again until 2027.

Texas Right to Life has been hard at work researching, writing, and advocating for bills that will stop liberal cities from using taxpayer money for abortion expenses, crack down on illegal abortion pill websites, promote adoption, and support life-affirming resources.

Senate Bill 730, along with its companion, House Bill 1806, states that “a governmental entity may not enter into a taxpayer resource transaction with an abortion provider, [or]an affiliate of an abortion provider, or an abortion assistance entity.”

The policy builds on a 2019 Texas law that bans cities from directly funding abortions. After the measure was enacted, cities like Austin adapted by covering travel expenses for out-of-state abortions, such as hotel stays and flights, instead of the procedure itself.

Texans should not be forced to pay for the killing of preborn babies, the trafficking of young girls, or the coercion of women. We have a long journey ahead before the end of May to pass this bill and advance the other key policies of the Texas Right to Life’s Priority Agenda, including:

  • Target illegal abortion pill websites, distributors, and accomplices
  • Connect families to specialized medical support if their preborn child is diagnosed with a life-threatening illness
  • Ensure only life-affirming providers qualify for the Thriving Texas Families program, such as pregnancy centers, adoption agencies, and maternity homes
  • Educate medical professionals about how to treat pregnant mothers and preborn babies in medical emergencies
  • Include adoption information in high school curriculum, CPS paperwork, and in hospitals to reduce the stigma pregnant women feel about adoption

Join us in prayer that this momentum continues and that every Pro-Life Priority becomes law! Share this article with your family and friends, so they too can voice their support for Life during this legislative session!
