Texas Governor Greg Abbott urged state lawmakers Monday night to pass Pro-Life legislation that bans discriminatory abortions. During his State of the State address he declared, “No unborn child should be targeted for abortion on the basis of race, sex, or disability.”
In 2019, Senate Bill 1033 and House Bill 2434, titled The Preborn NonDiscrimination Act (PreNDA), would have ended the remaining late-term abortions in Texas, prohibited discriminatory abortions for reasons of race, sex, or suspected disability, and would have given families life-affirming medical and social services for their preborn child with a life-limiting diagnosis. This was Texas Right to Life’s top abortion-related priority. Dozens of families supported PreNDA in hearings in both chambers, passed the House Committee on State Affairs, the Senate Committee on Health & Human Services, the full Senate, and yet PreNDA ultimately died in the House Committee on Calendars last session.
Texas Right to Life appreciates Senator Kelly Hancock (R-North Richland Hills) and Representative Matt Schaefer (R-Tyler) for committing to filing and fighting for this life-saving legislation again during the Regular Session of the 87th Texas Legislature.
Texas must do more to save innocent human lives, Abbott urged. “Our Creator endowed us with the Right to Life,” he acknowledged, “and yet millions of children lose their lives every year before they are born.”
Texas Right to Life strongly agrees with Governor Abbott that “[abortion]must end.” PreNDA is one part of the Texas Abolition Strategy, a bold and effective plan to save lives, highlight the humanity of the preborn, and actively challenge the deadly Supreme Court ruling Roe v. Wade.
