Texas Newborn Found Dead in a Garbage Truck

Sanitation workers discovered a deceased newborn boy in their garbage truck in Northwest Houston on August 14.

After dumping a garbage can into the truck, one worker went to repack the trash to make space. This is when he discovered the newborn at the bottom of the trash pile. Immediately, the frazzled man had to walk away from the truck as his coworker called the police. The chilling event was caught by a neighbor’s security camera.

The baby is believed to have been carried to full term and appeared to be between one to 30 days old, according to Harris County Sheriff’s Office officials.

Sheriff Ed Gonzalez said the infant’s umbilical cord was detached, and the injuries were consistent with the baby being crushed by the truck’s blade.

Officials have now located the birth mother of the deceased newborn.

The birth mother informed investigators that around Sunday morning, she was suffering from stomach pain and gave birth before fainting. She reported that once she woke up, she realized the baby was unresponsive and dead.

She also admitted to investigators that she was scared and discarded the newborn boy in the trash.

Officials say they have not yet determined if the infant was born alive or stillborn.

Because of the severity of the child’s injuries, the Harris County Institute of Forensic Science pathologist deemed the manner of death as “undetermined” following a completed pathology exam.

Neighbors who saw the sanitation workers find the newborn shared their pain and distress about the event.

Germany Scott expressed, “It wasn’t the only option. No matter if your parents are mad at you or if the father doesn’t want the child, you know what I’m saying?”

She added, “They could have taken him to the fire station or called for help. Adoption is an option, you know. That wasn’t the right answer.”

This is the fifth Texas infant found in or near the trash in just one month, with four of the children left to die within one week. Unfortunately, this is the second abandonment to result in death.

As Scott alluded to, the “Baby Moses Law” was created to prevent dangerous abandonments like these.

Texas’ “Baby Moses Law” allows parents who may not be able to care for their child to safely and anonymously place him or her in the care of those at a fire station, hospital, or police station with 24-7 employees within 60 days after birth.

Let’s join together in prayer today, asking for comfort for everyone who witnessed this tragedy, that the baby’s mother would come to know Christ, and for greater awareness of the “Baby Moses Law” across Texas. May this prevent future heartbreaking situations like this.
