She Was Almost Aborted — Now She Serves in the White House

Sonny Joy Nelson serves as the White House Director of Media Affairs — a position that carries influence across the nation. But her story didn’t begin in politics or Washington, D.C. It began in a small pregnancy resource center and in the heart of a young mother who chose Life.

Before working in the White House, Sonny was a marketing specialist at Hand of Hope Pregnancy Resource Center. She’s always been open about her Pro-Life convictions, sharing her faith boldly on social media, in interviews, and on podcasts. But her commitment to Life goes deeper than politics; it’s deeply personal.

“I have a personal story, much like many of you, where God Himself intervened for my life,” Sonny said, fighting back tears as she shared her testimony. “My mom found herself pregnant in her early twenties, unmarried, and with a boyfriend who didn’t think I should have a chance at life.”

Her father pressured her mother to have an abortion. “He made it very clear that she had a decision to make — it was either him or me,” Sonny shared. “And we see how that turned out … So, it just so happens that she is here in the crowd sitting there with you.”

That courageous mother, Tonya Baker Nelson, not only chose Life, she went on to dedicate her life to helping other women do the same. Tonya is now the founder and CEO of Hand of Hope Pregnancy Resource Centers in North Carolina.

“And just to brag on her for a minute,” Sonny added, smiling, “following that decision, in the 29 years since, she has opened three pregnancy centers in North Carolina and is responsible — her and Jesus — for saving thousands of lives.”

Sonny’s story is a powerful reminder that one brave “yes” to Life can change the course of generations. Her mother’s choice didn’t just save one baby, it helped launch a ministry that has rescued countless others.

It’s also a reminder that we need courageous Pro-Life voices in every sphere — even in the highest levels of government. If leaders like Sonny can speak boldly for the unborn in the heart of Washington, D.C., then so can we.

Still, there’s much work to be done. The Trump administration has not yet taken the necessary step to enforce an existing federal law — the Comstock Act — which makes it illegal to mail abortion pills anywhere in the nation. No new legislation is needed, only action from Trump.

Imagine the impact if those in power acted with the same conviction as Sonny and her mother — if they, too, chose courage over convenience, Life over apathy.

Because every life saved begins with someone who refuses to stay silent.
