Drawing 50 million visitors every year, Times Square in New York City is one of the most frequented pedestrian intersections in the world. The giant screens plastering buildings around the intersection are a quintessential hallmark of the destination, blasting messages and advertisements around the clock. Now, this communications medium has been harnessed by the activists at Students for Life of America to promote a message of Life, hope, and truth to passers-by for one week.
SFLA’s 10-second big screen spot began on November 11, and runs once per hour from 6am-2pm every day through Tuesday. The screen displaying the message is at 1500 Broadway and 43rd Ave.
New York is a fitting platform for this message. The city has one of the highest abortion rates in the nation, with nearly 74,000 abortions reported in 2012 – nearly 40% of pregnancies in NYC. Even more tragically, more black babies are aborted in New York City than are born alive. In fact, for every 1,000 black babies born alive in NYC, 1,180 are aborted. These children will never see Times Square, visit the Statue of Liberty, or enjoy a Broadway performance. New York needs a message of hope in the face of Planned Parenthood’s omnipresent darkness in the city, and Students for Life is leading the charge in a new and exciting way.
