Hospital Tried to End 90-Year-Old’s Life—Even as She Smiled at Her Family

90-year-old Loretta’s life was threatened when a Longview hospital started a 25-Day countdown to remove her ventilator against her and her family’s will.

This is legal under the Texas 25-Day Rule, which is an unconstitutional disregard for the patient’s God-given Right to Life.

Loretta’s treatment was working; she opened her eyes and even smiled when she saw her children and grandchildren.

Loretta’s children contacted Texas Right to Life’s frontline Patient Advocacy team for help the same day the hospital held a committee meeting to decide whether they would take away Loretta’s care. Our team recruited a Pro-Life attorney to help the family.

Loretta needed a medical facility that would provide a ventilator. If a new facility did not accept her before December 17, Loretta’s ventilator would be removed by the current hospital and she would die prematurely.

After the meeting, the hospital started a 25-day countdown, planning to prompt Loretta’s death on December 17. Racing against the clock, we urgently sought other facilities that would provide the care Loretta needed before the countdown on her life expired.

Three facilities said they could care for her, and after several days of negotiating, the insurance finally approved one of them. Finally, Loretta was transferred by ambulance from the Longview hospital, and she has arrived safely in Dallas.

Loretta passed away naturally 13 days later, without having her treatment prematurely removed.

God has the final say on all of our lives… this should not be in the hands of strangers on a hospital committee. All Life is a gift from the Lord, and all Life is treasured and valued by Him.
