Eight people have been arrested for their connection to a group of Houston-area clinics accused of performing illegal abortions and operating without valid medical licenses, according to Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton.
These new arrests follow the ongoing investigation of Maria Rojas, a 48-year-old midwife who performed illegal abortions and practiced without a medical license. Rojas was arrested in January 2025 and is the first individual charged under Texas’s Pro-Life laws following the overturn of Roe v. Wade.
Authorities launched an investigation into Rojas’ network of clinics operating in Waller, Cypress, Spring, and Katy. The case followed an anonymous complaint accusing her of performing abortions “for some side money.” Maria Rojas was secretly running a business that killed babies using a fake medical license.

A Waller County grand jury indicted Rojas on 15 felony counts, including performing illegal abortions and practicing medicine without a license, in June 2025. Court orders have since prohibited Rojas, her clinics, and any associates from performing medical procedures or abortions while the case proceeds. Maria, represented by the Center for Reproductive Rights, has denied all charges.
As part of the expanded investigation, eight additional people were indicted for allegedly assisting Rojas in the illegal medical practices. Those charged are Yaimara Hernandez Alvarez, Alina Valeron Leon, Dalia Coromoto Yanez, Yhonder Lebrun Acosta, Liunet Grandales Estrada, Gerardo Otero Aguero, Sabiel Bosch Gongora, and Jose Manuel Cendan Ley.
Attorney General Ken Paxton said he remains committed to enforcing Texas’ Pro-Life laws, stating,
Beyond being illegal, it is evil. These dens of fake doctors will not be allowed to operate in Texas. Those responsible will be held accountable. I will always protect innocent life and use every tool to enforce Texas’s pro-life laws.
These arrests are a vital step in protecting both mothers and babies in Texas. Unlicensed individuals performing secret abortions put women’s health and preborn children’s lives at serious risk. Texas’s strong Pro-Life laws—and the upcoming Woman and Child Protection Act (HB 7), taking effect December 4—ensure dangerous and illegal abortion operations are shut down.
Texas Right to Life commends Attorney General Paxton for his leadership in enforcing the law and defending the most vulnerable among us. We will continue standing alongside our state leaders to ensure that justice is served and babies are protected across Texas.
