Joe Biden has heaped scorn on Texas for the life-saving Texas Heartbeat Act that went into effect on September 1. Biden and his administration have been openly hostile to the law, which protects preborn babies from the time they have a detectable heartbeat, around six weeks’ gestation. Recently, Biden went so far in his mania for abortion that he flat-out denied that Life begins at conception.
Biden’s comments came at a press conference at the White House on the August jobs numbers. When responding to reporters’ questions, Biden answered a question about Texas’s Heartbeat Act, saying, “I have been and continue to be a strong supporter of Roe v. Wade, number one…I respect them, those who believe life begins at the moment of conception and all, I respect that. Don’t agree, but I respect that.”
Biden’s comment, which is contrary to the irrefutable science of human Life, shows how far he has descended into abortion radicalism. In contrast, as recently as in an interview in 2015, Biden said, “I’m prepared to accept that the moment of conception is a human life and being.” For decades, Biden relied on his reputation as a Catholic to put forth the image of being personally Pro-Life. In his long career as a politician, Biden consistently supported anti-Life legislation while claiming to be personally opposed to the killing of the preborn.
The logical inconsistency of this position aside, Biden used to vote partially Pro-Life by supporting the Hyde Amendment. This rider in the federal budget prevents Medicaid dollars from being used directly to pay for elective abortions. Despite pressure from abortion activists, Biden consistently protected Pro-Life taxpayers from paying for the elective abortions of others. As a result, thousands of lives were saved each year.
That all changed in the most recent presidential race. In a field of increasingly radical anti-Life candidates Biden abandoned all pretense of being Pro-Life. The anti-Life candidates in the Democrat primary were vying for the endorsement and monetary support of America’s largest abortion business, Planned Parenthood. In these circumstances, Biden finally reversed his public position and chose to come out in favor of taxpayer-funded killing of the preborn.
Even when Biden was nominally Pro-Life, he misrepresented the Pro-Life worldview and confused the issues. In the 2015 interview, Biden also said, “I’m prepared to accept as a matter of faith, my wife and I, my family, the issue of abortion.” He continued, “What I’m not prepared to do is impose a rigid view – precise view, rigid sounds pejorative, a precise view that is born out of my faith, on other people who are equally God-fearing, equally as committed to life, equally as committed to the sanctity of life.”
Biden inaccurately portrays abortion as a religious issue, when the principles of the sanctity of human Life are not fundamentally religious. The science is clear: Life does begin at conception. In that moment, a unique, unrepeatable human being comes into existence. That person does not have a voice and does not yet have a heartbeat (though that will begin within just 18-21 days). However, all that separates a preborn person, even at the earliest stages of development, from us is simply time and growth.
Biden’s shielding himself for decades with claims of his deeply held Catholic faith have led to controversy in the Church. Earlier this year, faithful bishops attempted to rebuke Biden for his support for killing the preborn and rightly to deny him Communion. After the decision of whether to deny an anti-Life politician Communion was left to the local bishop, Biden’s bishop announced that he would not deny Biden Communion.
No matter how Biden has tried to present the issue in the decades of his political career, abortion is not an exclusively religious issue. The science is irrefutable that Life begins at conception. That is why Pro-Life Texans passed the Heartbeat Act to protect innocent preborn children from a violent death. Biden’s confused and inaccurate take on science and the sanctity of human Life do not change reality and they do not change the law in Texas.
