Trump nominates Judge Neil Gorsuch to SCOTUS

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: Trump nominates Judge Neil Gorsuch to SCOTUS

Washington, D.C.- February 1, 2017: Last night, President Donald Trump nominated Judge Neil Gorsuch to the Supreme Court of the United States.  Judge Gorsuch served on the 10th Circuit Court of Appeals.  He is known to Pro-Life groups for his 2009 book “The Future of Assisted Suicide and Euthanasia.”  In his defense of hospitalized patients threatened by denial of care, Judge Gorsuch argued that “human life is intrinsically valuable and that intentional killing is always wrong.”  This strong defense of the Right to Life for vulnerable hospitalized patients is an important contribution to American jurisprudence.

President Trump’s nomination of Judge Gorsuch has been viewed by some as consistent with his campaign promises to appoint a Pro-Life justice.   Leading up to his November victory, President Trump stated he would “appoint Supreme Court judges who will be Pro-Life.”  He also said that he is in favor of overturning Roe v. Wade.  Furthermore, in speaking about the vacancy on the Supreme Court left by the death of Pro-Life champion Justice Antonin Scalia, Trump said he intended to appoint “judges very much in the mold of Justice Scalia.”

The next justice of the Supreme Court is of particular concern to the Pro-Life movement.  Texas has joined other Pro-Life states in leading the way to overturning Roe v. Wade through incremental legislative advances.  During the current session of the Texas Legislature, Texas Right to Life is lobbying for the Dismemberment Abortion Ban, an important Pro-Life bill that would save thousands of lives in Texas and move the law toward acknowledge the inherent human dignity of the preborn.

Undoubtedly, the well-funded abortion lobby has the Dismemberment Abortion Ban in their crosshairs and will immediately file suit upon passage.  A Supreme Court ruling against a challenge to the Dismemberment Abortion Ban would be a significant step on the legal path to dismantling Roe v. Wade.  Texas Right to Life hopes that if he is confirmed, Judge Gorsuch will prove to be a strong advocate for Pro-Life values that advance the rights of ALL people in our nation.
