Texas Lawmaker Sparks Controversy for Honoring Abortion Industry Leader

Cecile Richards, former president of Planned Parenthood, is making headlines in the Texas House—but not in the way you might expect.

Liberal Austin House Representative Donna Howard filed a resolution to honor the legacy of Cecile Richards in the Texas Capitol. This move has sparked controversy, with Pro-Life leaders and lawmakers speaking out against it.

Dr. John Seago, President of Texas Right to Life, was among the first to sound the alarm over this resolution, sharing the news on social media.

A resolution in the Texas House of Representatives is a formal statement that reflects the collective opinion of the House. If passed, this would have officially recognized and honored a woman responsible for three million abortions.

The document praises Cecile Richards as “one of the leading voices in the debate over reproductive health,” stating that “throughout her 12-year tenure, she valiantly upheld the importance of the organization’s services and defended the rights of the women and families that it served.”

However, during her time as President of Planned Parenthood, Richards shifted the organization’s focus to primarily providing abortions, leading to a sharp increase in deaths. In a Pro-Life state like Texas—one that values both babies and women—our lawmakers should not be prioritizing recognition of an individual so closely tied to the abortion industry.

Representative Brian Harrison voiced his strong opposition to the resolution, emphasizing that the Texas House should not spend its time honoring one of the nation’s most influential abortion advocates while there is still critical Pro-Life work to be done.

According to the Texas Health and Human Services Commission (HHSC), around 15,000 Texans traveled out of state to obtain abortions in 2023, the first full year following the overturning of Roe v. Wade. Meanwhile, an estimated 19,000 abortion pills were mailed to Texas this past year.

Each year, 30,000 babies in Texas continue to die from abortion. Instead of celebrating those who have expanded the abortion industry, our lawmakers should focus on protecting innocent babies and supporting women with unexpected pregnancies. Now is the time for action, not empty honors.

Texas Right to Life’s priority in this session is to protect preborn babies from illegal and out-of-state abortions. Here’s how:

  • The Stop Tax-Funded Abortion Travel Act (Senate Bill 730 by Senator Donna Campbell (R-New Braunfels) and House Bill 1806 by Representative Candy Noble (R-Lucas)): This measure will prevent cities like San Antonio and Austin from using taxpayer dollars to pay for abortion travel costs, like plane tickets and hotel rooms.
  • The Woman and Child Protection Act (bill numbers forthcoming): This policy will go after illegal abortion pill websites, distributors, and accomplices that send deadly drugs to pregnant women’s homes and dorm rooms.

Texas lawmakers must take action now to protect babies and women from the devastating impact of abortion. If we don’t act today, we may not have another opportunity until 2027.

Help raise awareness by sharing this article with your friends and family. And please join us in prayer that Texas lawmakers will stand for the preborn and pass Pro-Life laws!
