Planned Parenthood New York City (PPNYC) came up with a strange new strategy to solicit donations: an ad consisting almost solely of profanity. The video, aimed at Millennials, contains a parade of New Yorkers cussing out other New Yorkers and culminates with a woman proclaiming, “F*** New York and everyone in it.” The aggressive advertisement is part of PPNYC’s campaign to “protect our freedom to f***.” Creator of the ad called the campaign “fearless,” but fearless is an inaccurate way to describe crass, anti-social advertising.
Theatrics for the sake of fundraising is nothing new for Planned Parenthood, but this campaign goes beyond the usual. The ad is deceptive because the aim is PPNYC’s posturing as a legitimate sexual health care provider. The ad suggests that without Planned Parenthood, New Yorkers will not be able to act promiscuously. Whether they should embrace promiscuity is another question, but the fact is that Planned Parenthood does little to provide basic health services related to sexual health. But they do kill many preborn babies in abortion. There is no mention of abortion in the ad, but PPNYC states that they are “proud to provide abortion services.” Abortion, not health care, sexual or otherwise, is the focus of Planned Parenthood’s business.
This fact is confirmed by many statistics gleaned from Planned Parenthood’s own annual reports. From 2006 to 2014 the legitimate health services at Planned Parenthood declined dramatically, some by more than 70 percent. What did not decline? Abortion services. In those same years, Planned Parenthood’s market share of abortions increased by 11 percent.
The head of the ad agency responsible for the offensive video told AdWeek that PPNYC “had to be brave and make fearless decisions to overcome their daunting challenges. He went on to say:
We wanted to be celebratory in the face of massive opposition rather than plead their case in a typical PSA campaign that’s easy to ignore. ‘Freedom to F***’ is meant to speak to a younger generation more empowered than ever and hopefully willing to help. It all starts with the courage to do something different and we believe we have already succeeded.
There is no opposition to health care. In fact, taxpayer funded federally qualified health centers vastly out number Planned Parenthood locations across the country, and many Pro-Lifers support these low-cost health centers. What many people rightly object to is sending taxpayer dollars to Planned Parenthood, an organization that ends the lives of more than 320,000 preborn babies each year. The “massive opposition” PPNYC cusses at is not people who are opposed to health care but people who rightly recognize the Right to Life of every human being and think that Planned Parenthood, America’s largest abortion business, should no longer receive taxpayer funding.
The campaign to “Protect our right to safely f*** whoever the f*** we want” is not about so-called “safe sex.” The campaign is about protecting Planned Parenthood’s ability to profit from the killing of hundreds of thousands of preborn babies each year. The ad’s release coincides with nomination of Brett Kavanaugh for the Supreme Court of the United States. Commentators have made much of the fact that if Kavanaugh is confirmed, Roe v. Wade, the Supreme Court decision that invented a “right” to kill the preborn, could be challenged.
Planned Parenthood’s latest desperate plea for donations at a time when Pro-Life Americans are calling for an end to the slaughter of innocent preborn babies shows that Planned Parenthood is in the business of abortion. Planned Parenthood is not “fearless” for unleashing an explicit and offensive ad campaign, but the time has come for Pro-Lifers to be fearless in speaking out against them.
