Planned Parenthood Releases 2009 Abortion Numbers

This February, Planned Parenthood Federation of America updated its website to include the number of services it performed in 2009.  These numbers show two very alarming trends.  Not only did Planned Parenthood commit more abortions in 2009 than ever before, they also provided fewer non-abortion services to women than in past years.

In 2009, Planned Parenthood affiliates committed 332,278 abortions across America.  This number includes both surgical and chemical abortions.  According to LifeNews, this number represents an increase of 2.5% over the 324, 008 abortions that were committed by Planned Parenthood in 2008.  Furthermore, the 2008 numbers showed an increase of 6.1% over the 2007 numbers.  This deadly pattern shows that Planned Parenthood is increasing abortions at an alarming rate that shows no sign of slowing.  In fact, abortions performed at Planned Parenthood affiliates have increased every year for the past 15 years.

It is also important to note that these new numbers show that Planned Parenthood is responsible for 27.6% of all abortions committed in the nation.  In other words, more than 1 out of every 4 abortions is committed by a Planned Parenthood affiliate.  This makes them the world’s leading abortion provider.  Planned Parenthood committed a horrendous 5,320,095 abortions from 1970 to 2009.

Unfortunately, this report also shows a dramatic decline in non-abortion services provided in 2009.  Only 7,021 women received prenatal services from Planned Parenthood during 2009.  That is a 25% drop from those services rendered in 2008.  Even more revealing is the fact that only 977 women were referred to adoption services nationwide in 2009.  That is a steep 59% decline from adoption referrals in 2008.

These declines show that Planned Parenthood is focusing its energy on committing more abortions and phasing out other less profitable services.  Jim Sedlak, vice president of American Life League says, “We estimate that the income for abortion accounts for 40 percent of its annual clinic income.”  It is clear that Planned Parenthood is not going to let go of the millions they make in abortions, and that is why we have heartbreaking statistics such as the fact that 97.6% of all pregnant women that went to Planned Parenthood in 2009 were sold abortions.

Pro-Life activists and organizations must remain strong in the fight against Planned Parenthood.  While these numbers are sobering and disheartening, we must not feel defeated.  We need to rally around the election victories that were won in November and go to work weakening the Planned Parenthood monolith through legislative efforts and educational outreach.  Women need to realize that Planned Parenthood is not there to offer them support or help, but rather to pressure them into a costly abortion that ends the life of their baby.
