The Democratic leadership and President Obama are exerting relentless pressure on Pro-Life Democrats to support the phony anti-Life Ellsworth rule in the health care reform bill (H.R. 3962). In fact, President Obama is arm-twisting Pro-Life Democrats and others in the U.S. House as you read this, deceiving them and the public about the abortion language in H.R. 3962. The House leadership must be asked to stop this abortion money-laundering scheme. Read to the end to be informed and then call Speaker Pelosi immediately.
The federal government has a long history of preventing our tax dollars from being used to fund abortions except in the case of rape or incest. Unfortunately, this practice may come to an end within the next day or two when the votes on H.R. 3962 begin.
Yesterday, pro-abortion House Democratic leadership announced that they will block attempts for Pro-Life amendments. Rep. Brad Ellsworth (D-IN) will offer a rule (on which the rest of the House will vote), to exclude another vote on a Pro-Life amendment proposed by Congressman Bart Stupak (D-MI). The House is expected to vote on the “rule” early Saturday morning.
The Stupak amendment protects Life and makes clear that the federal government has no business funding abortions. Congressman Stupak follows in the tradition of the late Pro-Life champion Henry Hyde, who successfully led efforts during the 1970s to prevent federal Medicaid dollars from funding abortions.
The anti-Life Ellsworth rule instead allows the federal government to fund abortions on demand as part of the new health care bill. Pro-abortion Speaker Nancy Pelosi and rabidly pro-abortion Congressman Henry Waxman (D-CA) are lying that the Ellsworth language allays Pro-Life concerns. (Why are Pro-Lifers always surprised when people who are willing to kill the unborn are also willing to lie?) In fact, the Ellsworth amendment merely sets up separate accounts that move money around thus effectively laundering our tax dollars for abortions.
The Ellsworth language directs the U.S. Secretary of Health to hire a contractor to pay abortion providers for elective abortions; these payments are explicitly authorized by the bill. [Page 11, Line 17, Section 222 “Abortions for which Public Funding Is Allowed”]
Page 96, Line 16, Section 213 “Insurance Rating Rules” is even more alarming, requiring a monthly abortion premium be charged of all enrollees in the government-run plan. This premium will be paid into a U.S. Treasury account and the money held to pay for abortion services.
Texas Right to Life and National Right to Life support the Stupak Amendment and vehemently oppose the pro-abortion Ellsworth-Waxman-Pelosi language.
Join Texas Right to Life in urging Speaker Pelosi to stop the Ellsworth rule and allow a vote on the Stupak amendment. Please call Speaker Pelosi and demand that she continue the tradition of preventing tax dollars from funding abortion.
Speaker Pelosi's office number is 202 – 225 – 0100 or 202 – 225 – 4965. Flood her phone lines; the lines may be busy; keep calling–lives are at stake.
Call now–the vote will be early Saturday. Call to support of the Pro-Life Stupak amendment.
