Is this Britney Spears Song about her Abortion Regret?

Britney Spears dropped the stunning news this week that Justin Timberlake coerced her to have an abortion 20 years ago because he didn’t want to be a father, and she still suffers from it.

Spears reflected in her upcoming memoir previewed in People Magazine, “[My pregnancy] was a surprise, but for me, it wasn’t a tragedy…. But Justin definitely wasn’t happy about the pregnancy. He said we weren’t ready to have a baby in our lives, that we were way too young.”

At the time, Spears was 19 and Timberlake was 20.

“If it had been left up to me alone, I never would have done it… To this day, it’s one of the most agonizing things I have ever experienced in my life,” Spears wrote.

Looking back on her work, fans now wonder if her popular song “Everytime” was really about her baby.

Spears’ 2003 track was the first song she ever wrote and has long been rumored to be about Justin, but now the lyrics carry a different weight:

Every time I try to fly I fall / Without my wings / I feel so small / I guess I need you, baby / And every time I see you in my dreams / I see your face / It’s haunting me / I guess I need you, baby

What have I done? / You seem to move uneasy

Please, forgive me / My weakness caused you pain / And this song’s my sorry

Every time I see you in my dreams / I see your face / You’re haunting me / I guess I need you, baby

The music video may reveal even more to this theory…

At the end of the video, Spears walks into two different hospital rooms with starkly different outcomes.

One woman is dying in the ER after drowning in a bathtub; the other woman receives her newborn baby in her arms after just giving birth. Spears’ character drifts between the scenes.

The video ends with a close-up of the child.

Commenters on social media expressed their sorrow and understanding of the piece now knowing that the song could have been influenced by Spears’ abortion.

YouTube user Anna reflected, “Now we understand why the melody sounds like a lullaby…”

Ashleigh Thomas wrote she “cried her eyes out” after sharing that a man pressured her into an abortion, too:

“Like everyone else, listening to this with a new perspective, the user said. “I’ll have this on repeat for a while thinking of what my unborn child would be like today.”
