For the second year in a row, Texas A&M University has been ranked in the Top 12 Public Colleges and Universities for Pregnant and Parenting Students by Students for Life of America (SFLA). The rankings are compiled based on the amount of assistance and support pregnant and parenting students receive at a given public university. Texas A&M was the only Texas university included in the rankings, coming in at number nine behind universities such as the University of New Mexico, University of California San Diego, and the University of Washington (which was ranked number one).
Texas A&M University achieved their ninth place ranking for several reasons. The University has a Breastfeeding Welcomed Here campaign, “dedicated to ensuring that nursing mothers on campus are aware of the available campus facilities in which breast milk can be comfortably expressed.” With 12 lactation rooms across campus, breastfeeding students are encouraged to continue their education while caring for their child’s health. Additionally, the Pro-Life Aggies, Texas A&M’s student Pro-Life group, award a Pregnant and Parenting Student Scholarship every spring to deserving student parents.
The scholarship was first awarded in 2012, after about a year and a half of fundraising, and has supported students at Texas A&M and Blinn College who choose Life for their children ever since. In 2016, Pro-Life Aggies awarded five scholarships to worthy recipients and are currently raising money for the scholarships they will award in 2017. Texas Right to Life Dr. Joseph Graham Fellow and current PLA President, Allyson Hunter, and the rest of the 2016-2017 Pro-Life Aggies eagerly anticipate awarding more scholarships at their 6th annual Run for their Lives 5K in the spring.
