China and North Korea are two countries no one associates with enshrining human rights or women’s rights. As such, Pro-Lifers would not be surprised that rampant late-term abortion is among the most heinous characteristics of these human rights abusers. But, sadly, Politifact has confirmed that the United States, along with only four other nations on the planet (Singapore, Vietnam, Canada, and the Netherlands), joins China and North Korea in perpetrating this tragedy. The U.S. – once a beacon of liberty and justice for all, is now the paradigm of freedom for only some.

In the absence of federal action on abortions past 20 weeks (the undisputed point of gestation at which the preborn feel the excruciating pain of abortion), many states have banned late-term abortions independently. These states – with Texas among them– recognize the blatant inhumanity of ripping a fully-formed child, capable of pain, apart in his mother’s womb. In fact, so do the majority of Americans, who flatly oppose the so-called “right” to kill pain-capable preborn children. According to National Right to Life:
In a nationwide poll of 1,623 registered voters in November 2014, The Quinnipiac University Poll found that 60% would support a law such as the Pain Capable Unborn Child Protection Act prohibiting abortion after 20 weeks, while only 33% opposed such legislation. Women voters split 59-35% in support of such a law, while independent voters supported it by 56-36%.
The Pain-Capable Unborn Child Protection Act did see success in the United States House of Representatives in mid-May, after a five-month standoff within the Republican Party. But even as the legislation advances on a federal level, the bill faces certain death at the hands of rabidly anti-Life President Barack Obama, whose cabinet has promised to advise a veto.
Nevertheless, individual states are leaning less and less on the leadership of the federal government where Pro-Life legislation is concerned. Just this week, a law protecting preborn children from late-term abortion went into effect in West Virginia. And the battle for the protection was hard-fought; the bill suffered a gubernatorial veto after passing through the House and Senate, but the state legislature overrode Gov. Tomblin’s veto, and the law is now in effect.
As Pro-Life conviction overtakes the U.S., states will continue to defend Life even when the federal government fails to protect America’s most vulnerable citizens.
