Legislative Internship — Spring 2025

Organization: Texas Right to Life (TRL)
Department: Legislative Department
Job Title: Legislative Intern
Job Location: Austin
Job Type: Full-time (Unpaid)
Duration: March through June 2025

THE LEGISLATIVE DEPARTMENT:
Texas Right to Life (TRL) is the oldest and largest statewide Pro-Life organization in Texas and operates as a Christian organization. The Legislative Department, one of TRL’s three branches, is dedicated to promoting a Culture of Life through peaceful, prayerful, and legal means.

Our work includes drafting Pro-Life legislation, lobbying for its passage, and overseeing the implementation of life-affirming laws. Since the Texas Legislature only convenes biannually on odd-numbered years, we have limited time during each session to advocate for change. During legislative sessions, we focus on advancing Pro-Life laws and opposing harmful legislation.

When the Texas Legislature is not in session, we assist with lawsuits related to Pro-Life policies, ensure the proper implementation of life-related laws, and research new legislative initiatives. Our team also engages in public outreach by delivering speeches, attending events, and fostering relationships with elected officials and grassroots organizations.

OBJECTIVE:
Join the Legislative Team to advance the mission and message of Texas Right to Life through legislative and legal efforts. As an intern, you will gain hands-on experience in political, legal, and legislative fields, learning how the legislative process works in Texas and how to effectively engage with legislators.

You will also deepen your understanding of key topics and trends within the Pro-Life movement by researching life issues. Additionally, this internship will help you develop and refine essential skills in reading, writing, and public speaking.

REQUIREMENTS:

  • High School Diploma
  • Able to work a minimum of 40 hours a week (remotely and at the Capitol in Austin)
  • Personal belief requirements; willing to sign a statement of faith and a non-disclosure agreement
  • Passionate about Pro-Life issues
  • Proficiency in reading and writing

RESPONSIBILITIES:

  1. Bill Review
    • During each legislative session, thousands of bills are filed—over 8,000 were submitted in the 88th Regular Legislative Session alone. TRL’s Legislative Team carefully reviews these bills, typically analyzing around 2,000 that pertain to life-related issues. As part of the team, you will help identify which bills TRL should support, amend, or oppose.
  2. Research
    • TRL’s Legislative Team drafts several priority bills for each session. You will assist in researching these specific initiatives, as well as other life-related issues, to support the legislative agenda.
  3. Legislative and Administrative Support
    • Throughout the session, we advocate for Pro-Life bills by meeting with legislators and their staff, hosting events, distributing informational materials at the Capitol, monitoring hearing and floor debates, and testifying in hearings on relevant legislation. You will contribute to these efforts by providing support for these activities.

This job description is not intended to be comprehensive. The intern will be asked to perform other reasonable and related business duties as assigned by supervisors.
