Texas is facing a growing abortion crisis: Nearly 19,000 abortion pills are pouring into the state every year. Texas Right to Life and 97 other Pro-Life leaders sent a letter to Governor Greg Abbott on Tuesday, urgently asking him to add the Woman and Child Protection Act to the July special session. The letter includes Lieutenant Governor Dan Patrick, state lawmakers, Pro-Life groups, and other conservative activists calling on the governor to confront this emergency.
Since the reversal of Roe v. Wade on this day three years ago, the abortion industry has shifted tactics, trafficking abortion pills into Pro-Life states like Texas. These drugs often come from overseas or sketchy websites, with no medical oversight.
The Woman and Child Protection Act, which passed the Texas Senate but was slow-walked to death in the House, would:
- Empower any Texan to sue those who traffic, mail, distribute, or manufacture abortion-inducing drugs;
- Allow families to file wrongful death lawsuits if a woman is harmed or killed by these drugs; and
- Authorize state-led prosecution of abortion pill traffickers.
Earlier this week, Governor Abbott announced he will bring lawmakers back to Austin for 30 days starting July 21 to address a handful of issues that were not completed before the June deadline.
“Texas has made real progress in building a Culture of Life,” Texas Right to Life President Dr. John Seago stated, “But we cannot ignore the greatest threat to moms and babies in our state today—tens of thousands of abortion pills illegally trafficked into Texas. We urge Governor Abbott to once again protect women and children from the violence of abortion.”
Every successful abortion ends the life of a preborn child and places women in danger. Abortion pills are neither safe nor rare. These drugs are 22 times more harmful than FDA reports suggest, and more than 1 in 10 women who take them require emergency medical care. Meanwhile, thousands of preborn Texans are killed each year, and their mothers are left to suffer.
The Woman and Child Protection Act targets the out-of-state actors and traffickers who make a profit off deceiving women about the effectiveness and safety of the pills.
Without immediate action, an estimated 38,000 more preborn children could lose their lives by the next time lawmakers are scheduled to meet—January 2027.

Please take swift action and add SB 2880 to the call for a Special Session. Texas must continue to lead in protecting Life.
