San Antonio City Council Doubles Down on Awarding Taxpayer Grants for Abortions

San Antonio City Council affirmed its plans Wednesday to use taxpayer dollars to subsidize out-of-state and illegal abortions.

The council earmarked $500,000 in 2023 for a “Reproductive Justice Fund” and quickly landed in a lawsuit from Texas Right to Life to stop the grants from being awarded to pro-abortion groups.

Council members revealed Wednesday that they refuse to back down on their agenda to kill preborn children:

“Public funds should be used to promote health, period. That includes providing women with the means to get (the) care of their choice, even if it’s in another state,” said Councilmember Melissa Cabello Havrda, who vocally supported the use of public grants to travel for abortion.

“Honestly, we aren’t owed an explanation as to why someone may choose to have or not have a baby, to build a human,” Councilman Jalen McKee-Rodriguez said. “If someone doesn’t want to carry a fetus they should not have to.”

The city council next will request proposals from organizations looking to use the money and will then vote on the contracts in the fall.

Paying for abortions or costs associated with them is illegal in Texas. Any person or government that gives money to these organizations becomes complicit in their criminal acts.

The organizations that lobbied for this budgetary provision and hope to obtain taxpayer funds include Jane’s Due Process, AVOW, the Buckle Bunnies Fund, Sueños Sin Fronteras, and the Lilith Fund for Reproductive Equity. These groups break Texas law by “procuring” out-of-state abortions, which is a criminal act when any part of the procurement process occurs within Texas. The Buckle Bunnies Fund also directs pregnant women to obtain illegal abortion pills in Texas, which violates the state’s criminal abortion laws and the murder statute.

Texas Right to Life sued the City of San Antonio in October to prevent the government from giving taxpayer money to anti-Life organizations.
