A new poll is offering a revealing look at how Americans view abortion, and the results point to a deeper truth. Many people recognize that abortion takes an innocent human life, even if they struggle with where to draw the line.
When asked how they identify on abortion, 37% of respondents said they are “Pro-Life,” while 62% identified as “pro-choice.” Only 1% said they were unsure.
Among Catholics, the difference is striking. Of those who say they actively practice their faith, 58% identify as Pro-Life, compared to 41% who say they are pro-abortion. Among non-practicing Catholics, the numbers flip. Only 31% identify as Pro-Life, while 68% say they are pro-abortion.
This contrast highlights the powerful role that faith and moral formation play in recognizing the dignity of every baby in the womb.
However, there is something deeply concerning in this study. About one-third of those polled believe abortion should be allowed at any point in pregnancy, up until birth. That means 32% of Americans support the most extreme position on abortion.
At the same time, 37% say most abortions should be illegal. Within that group:
- 6% say abortion should never be allowed under any circumstances
- 10% say it should only be permitted to save the life of the mother
- 21% say it should be limited to cases involving the mother’s life, rape, or incest
But even some of these so-called “exceptions” reveal a tragic inconsistency.

Every preborn child, regardless of how he or she was conceived or the circumstances surrounding the pregnancy, has inherent dignity and a Right to Life. A child conceived in rape is no less human. A child diagnosed with a condition is no less worthy of protection. True medical care should always seek to save both mother and child, never intentionally end one life for the convenience of the other.
The discomfort many Americans feel about abortion is a sign that hearts are not hardened. It is a sign that consciences are still at work.
Many who identify as “pro-choice” do not support abortion without limits. Deep down, they know something is wrong. The question is whether they will be invited to fully embrace the truth that every baby, without exception, deserves protection.
How We Can Make a Difference
This moment calls for courage, clarity, and compassion. It is not too late to change these numbers and build a culture of Life in your community, our state, and our nation.
Speak the truth boldly. Do not shy away from conversations. Help others understand that every preborn baby has value.
Bring the message into your community. Share the Pro-Life message in your church, workplace, and social circles. Culture changes when people are willing to speak up.
Support women in need. Connect pregnant women to local Pregnancy Resource Centers, where they can receive life-affirming care, resources, and hope.
Polls can reveal where people stand, but it is people, not percentages, who change the world.
Right now, there is a clear opportunity to help our neighbors move from uncertainty to conviction and to build a culture where every baby in the womb is protected, with no exceptions.
