The Fight for Life is NOT Only a State Battle, but a National One

The overturning of Roe v. Wade (1973) unshackled states, providing them the opportunity to again engage in the issue of abortion. But abortion is not merely a state issue. Every successful abortion ends the Life of a preborn child, and in many states, these innocent children will never be protected unless the nation intervenes to uphold their Right to Life as guaranteed by the 14th Amendment.

As the November election draws near, it is crucial to recognize that abortion is the most pressing moral question facing Americans today.

Vice President Harris and her running mate, Governor Tim Walz (D–MN), have both been staunch proponents of “women’s reproductive rights.” Harris’s platform confirms that “as President, she will never allow a national abortion ban to become law. And when Congress passes a bill to restore reproductive freedom nationwide, she will sign it.” A federal abortion-on-demand mandate would once again strip the states of their jurisdiction over abortion laws.

If Harris is elected in November, she will enact federal legislation protecting the so-called “right” to an abortion. The American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU), a national abortion activists group, is counting on Harris to promote abortion as a top priority, stating, “She must not only demand legislation that codifies abortion rights and invalidates state bans and restrictions but also end discriminatory barriers to abortion care, such as insurance coverage bans like the Hyde Amendment.” In addition to codifying abortion rights, she will work to end the Hyde Amendment, which restricts Medicaid from covering the cost of an abortion. It does not end there — Harris may even repeal the Comstock Act, which prohibits the mailing of abortion pills and other abortion-related materials.

While the states currently have the power to protect preborn children and mothers from abortion, this may no longer be the case come January 2025 if Vice President Harris is elected as President. But what about Congress? With only a slim four-seat Republican majority in the House and just a dozen competitive seats, it is entirely possible that Democrats could regain control of the House. With Democratic control of both the House and Senate, Harris will be able to execute her abortion policies.

In the recent presidential debate, Harris was asked whether she would “support any restrictions on a woman’s right to an abortion.” She replied, “I absolutely support reinstating the protections of Roe v. Wade, and as you rightly mentioned, nowhere in America is a woman carrying a pregnancy to term and asking for an abortion. That is not happening; it’s insulting to the women of America.” But the fact is, late-term abortions are occurring in America. Nine states and Washington, D.C., conduct abortions at any point during the nine months of pregnancy. Harris never answered the question, indicating that she does not believe any protections for preborn children are warranted.

Harris’s running mate, Governor Tim Walz, has signed legislation to remove the requirement to provide medical care to babies born alive after a “failed” abortion, meaning doctors can refuse to treat babies that miraculously survive. During her time as a senator for California, Harris also voted to block a bill that would have protected babies born alive after an abortion.

As Pro-Life Americans, we must vote with Life as our primary concern. As Pro-Life Christians, we cannot sit idle in the face of the possibility of infanticide on the ticket; we must defend the defenseless!
