Democrats swept Texas in the midterm elections, taking the U.S. Senate seat, and the races for governor, lieutenant governor, attorney general, and more.
For the first time since 1994, Texas turned blue. Tuesday’s losses threaten our ability to pass laws that save babies from abortion.
From a political standpoint, this is terrible news. However, we know the fight to protect the lives of babies, their mothers, and hospital patients is much more than a political issue. As Christians, we have been called to defend every single human being because they all have been made in God’s image. While this election dramatically changed our political landscape, our calling from the Lord is always the same.
Here’s where we are:
James Talarico won the U.S. Senate seat.
Talarico wooed Texas voters by pretending to be moderate. He lied about his record, and Texans bought it. He:
- Claimed that God gave Mary an opportunity to abort Jesus;
- Asked Joe Biden to turn federal lands into abortion clinics;
- Tried to put abortion in the state Constitution;
- Voted against protecting babies who survive abortions;
- Voted to keep tax-funded abortions; and
- Voted against $287 million that would help pregnant moms.
But the losses in the Texas government are even more concerning.
The governor, lieutenant governor, and attorney general determine whether Pro-Life laws are passed, signed, and then defended in court.
Here’s what these results mean:
❌ Gina Hinojosa will veto Pro-Life laws as governor.
A pro-abortion governor could veto new Pro-Life bills that we pass. That means the flood of illegal abortion pills will continue or even get worse in Texas.
She could also fill state agencies with pro-abortion staff so Pro-Life charities don’t get funding to help pregnant women.
Hinojosa has a terrible record on Life. She opposed $267 million in state funding to help pregnant women, voted to keep tax-funded abortions, and refused to vote for a bill requiring medical care for babies who survive abortions.
❌ Vikki Goodwin will block Pro-Life laws as lieutenant governor.
The lieutenant governor leads the Texas Senate and can heavily influence which bills move forward.
With Goodwin in this position, passing new policies against illegal abortion pills will become much harder.
Goodwin has already shown where she stands. She tried to put “personal reproductive autonomy” in the Texas Constitution to legalize all abortions, voted to keep tax-funded abortions, and opposed an amendment protecting hospital patients from being forced off life-sustaining treatment.
❌ Nathan Johnson will let criminals run rampant as attorney general.
The attorney general is Texas’ top lawyer. This office is responsible for defending our laws when abortion activists challenge them in court. He is also supposed to go after criminals in other states when they illegally ship abortion pills here.
However, Johnson’s far-left views mean that he will drop Texas’ existing legal cases that try to stop abortions. Further, he won’t defend our Pro-Life laws if abortion activists challenge them in court.
In the past, Johnson tried to repeal Texas’ Pro-Life laws, including protections for children after birth. He voted against protecting babies who survive abortions, opposed efforts to stop tax-funded abortions, and voted against a bill helping parents whose unborn babies are diagnosed with serious illnesses.
What happens next?
In 2027, Texas Right to Life will have to work overtime in the Capitol to stop Democrats from legalizing abortion again. However, we may still be able to work toward bipartisan policies to improve adoption and protect hospital patients from being forced off of life-sustaining treatment.
Tuesday’s results also mean that we must look beyond Austin, too.
President Trump can take action right now to stop the flood of illegal abortion pills coming into our country. He does not need Congress to save babies from abortion by using an existing federal law that bans abortion pills in the mail.
This election also reveals a much bigger problem.
We have a lot of work to do to change hearts and minds, especially in our churches. We must help our neighbors understand that abortion ends the life of an innocent child.
We cannot simply focus on elections and expect our culture to change. We must make the case for Life in our churches, our communities, and our everyday conversations.
The election may have changed who holds power in Texas, but it has not changed our mission.
At Texas Right to Life, we will not back down. We are honored to be in this ministry alongside you where we will continue to save lives and redeem our culture.
Thank you for standing with us. We need you now more than ever.
