New York City Mayor Elect Zohran Mamdani has made one thing clear: he believes Pro-Life pregnancy centers are “fraudulent” and harmful to women. According to Mamdani and other anti-Life politicians, these centers mislead mothers and hinder mothers’ ability to receive an abortion — despite the fact that they offer free medical care, counseling, material resources, and long-term support to women in crisis.
Just weeks before Election Day, Mamdani held a press conference surrounded by smiling babies as he announced his plan to create citywide “baby baskets” for every newborn in New York City. His pitch? A box of diapers, wipes, onesies, and a copy of Goodnight Moon for each of the roughly 125,000 babies born in the city every year.
It was a cute moment, and an ironic one.
Because the Pro-Life ministries Mamdani dismisses as “fraud” already do far more than his new proposal will.
Baby Boxes: A Nice Gesture, but Not a Real Support System
Mamdani’s plan conveniently followed an announcement made by current Mayor Eric Adams, who had unveiled his own baby-box initiative just one week earlier across four city hospitals. Adams’ program costs $2.6 million in its first year and is funded entirely by taxpayers.
The boxes come from Welcome Baby USA, featuring:
- A proprietary “NYC loves me” onesie
- Swaddles, pajamas, wipes, and nearly 100 diapers
- Baby wash, diaper cream, and a grooming kit
- Maxipads, nursing pads, and lanolin for mothers
- A parenting guide and Goodnight Moon
These items are undoubtedly useful; no one denies that. New parents appreciate practical help.
But these boxes provide a few weeks of assistance. Just a few weeks.

While Mamdani labels pregnancy centers as “fraudulent,” here is what these centers offer to mothers long after the baby box diapers run out:
- Free pregnancy tests and ultrasounds
- Licensed medical consultations
- Parenting classes and long-term mentorship
- Material assistance for months or years
- Housing and job-training
- Community support networks
- Emergency help for domestic violence cases
- Programs that walk with mothers from pregnancy through toddlerhood
These centers don’t hand out one-time items and disappear. They build relationships. They support women emotionally, medically, materially, spiritually, and practically.
To call this “fraudulent” while promoting a one-time box of diapers is not just inaccurate — it’s insulting.
Critics Point Out the Double Standard
Opponents of Mamdani’s stance argue that his hostility toward Pro-Life pregnancy centers has nothing to do with protecting women and everything to do with protecting the killing of babies through abortion. By dismissing centers that help mothers choose Life, critics say, Mamdani is prioritizing remaining socially pro-abortion over actual support for vulnerable families.
His own program exposes this contradiction:
- He calls pregnancy centers “dangerous,” yet his new project resembles a small piece of what pregnancy centers do every day.
- He claims to help mothers, yet pushes policies that increase abortion and decrease alternatives.
- He promises support, but offers only a box of supplies while attacking those offering years of resources.
If baby boxes are compassionate, why aren’t the centers offering baby supplies, counseling, and care?
If helping mothers is good, why demonize organizations doing exponentially more help?
New York Moms Don’t Need Politics — They Need Support
While giving resources can be a nice gesture, the contrast between Mamdani’s attacks and his weak solutions makes one thing clear: Pregnancy centers aren’t the problem. They’re doing the compassionate work that anti-Life politicians only pretend to do.
If Mamdani truly cared about empowering women, he wouldn’t target the very organizations that walk with mothers long after the baby boxes run out.
