Netflix’s Ginny & Georgia Glamorizes Teen Abortion for Gen Z Viewers

Netflix’s hit series Ginny & Georgia—a show with a devoted Gen Z fanbase—has taken its promotion of abortion to a troubling new level.

In Season 3, viewers learn that one of the main characters, 16-year-old Ginny, aborted her baby. The storyline portrays abortion as the “logical” and even “comforting” solution, romanticizing a decision that ends a child’s life and subtly encouraging young viewers in similar situations to this as trendy and empowering.

Ginny is depicted as a high school girl in an unstable relationship—much like her own mother, Georgia, who became pregnant with Ginny at just 15. In one emotional scene, Georgia tells her daughter:

“You’re the best thing that ever happened to me. But you changed my life. My life became about you. And that was okay, that was good for me. But you’re different. You have so much to look forward to, so much life to live, and I want you to have the best life — the very best life. And a baby, that is sacrifice. That’s just truth. I made my decision. Only you can make this one.”

After Ginny decides to end her pregnancy, she apologizes to her mother—an apology Georgia quickly dismisses, confirming abortion is the right choice for her.

The show then depicts Ginny taking abortion pills and resting with a hot water bottle, suggesting the process is no more difficult than menstrual cramps. In reality, many women describe chemical abortions as the most physically painful experience of their lives. Studies show 1 in 10 women experience severe medical complications from abortion pills, making them 22 times more dangerous than the FDA reports.

Disturbingly, the episode even turns the aftermath into a romantic moment—showing her love interest picking Ginny up after her appointment. This framing downplays the death of a preborn child, painting it as an act of convenience that can strengthen a relationship, rather than a life-altering tragedy.

By softening the realities of abortion and promoting it as a desirable option for teens, Ginny & Georgia not only misinforms its young audience but also normalizes a decision that has permanent consequences—for both mother and child.
