Major Pro-Life Bill to Stop Abortion Pills Passes Texas House

The Texas House of Representatives passed a major Pro-Life bill Thursday aimed at stopping mail-order abortion pills.

The Woman and Child Protection Act (HB 7 by Rep. Jeff Leach, sponsored by Sen. Bryan Hughes) will head to the Senate for final approval next week.

Chemical abortions are the biggest threat to preborn babies today. Abortion businesses are closing brick-and-mortar facilities but shifting their tactics online and underground. Activists send deadly pills into Texas illegally from other states and countries—to the tune of at least 19,000 orders of abortion drugs each year.

The Pro-Life movement must be equally bold and creative to stop them.

Representative Jeff Leach, who authored the measure, stated during Thursday’s debate:

“This bill is about our fellow Texans. This bill is about our future fellow Texans, specifically. They are unborn, but they are alive, and they are worthy of our focus and our work here tonight on this bill. These fellow Texans have hands and feet. They have fingers and toes. They have eyes and eyelids, ears, and noses. They have unique personalities. They have brain waves. They have heartbeats. And they have rights.”

If passed, Texas would become the toughest state to crack down on abortion pills. The Woman and Child Protection Act would:

  • Allow Texans to shut down companies that sell abortion pills;
  • Let women who are harmed by illegal abortions sue pill traffickers; and
  • Help Pro-Lifers stop abortion activists who are hiding in liberal states.

The pregnant mother would not be penalized, but businesses and activists who supply the drugs would risk $100,000 fines.

Since Texas legislators returned to the Capitol in January, Texas Right to Life has pushed the Woman and Child Protection Act as the Pro-Life movement’s top priority, and was joined by 129 other conservative leaders this summer.

Texas Right to Life President Dr. John Seago celebrated:

“Thank God for this victory. Texas representatives voted to save 19,000 preborn babies and mothers who are at risk of mail-order abortions each year. With the Woman and Child Protection Act, Texas can set an example for the rest of the nation to go after the new global abortion pill syndicate.”

Chemical abortions use two medications to end preborn lives. The first pill (mifepristone) kills the child by starving her to death. The second pill (misoprostol) expels the baby’s body from the uterus. Additionally, 1 in 10 mothers who take abortion pills require emergency care afterward. The Woman and Child Protection Act is crucial to end this.

Ask officials to stop abortion pills and pass the Woman and Child Protection Act here:

Dear Lieutenant Governor Patrick,

I urge you to pass House Bill 7, the Woman and Child Protection Act. I strongly believe that every life deserves to be protected, from fertilization to natural death. However, even with our current Pro-Life laws, tens of thousands of abortion pills are mailed into our state each year, killing preborn babies. Texans need more tools to bring about justice for abortionists and activists who send deadly drugs to our communities. Please quickly advance HB 7, so Pro-Life citizens can save preborn children and defend their mothers from abortion pills.

Thank you for your leadership.
