Elected lawmakers often receive the entirety of the spotlight in the Texas Legislature. However, their staff members working behind the scenes are unsung heroes who dedicate long hours, intensive research, and unwavering conviction to defend Life. During the 89th Texas Legislature, several staffers proved indispensable, going above and beyond in the fight to safeguard mothers and their preborn children.

Foremost among these hidden champions is Caitriana Corkill, who played a pivotal role in the office of Senator Bryan Hughes. Corkhill was instrumental in crafting two of the most significant Pro-Life victories of the session: the Woman and Child Protection Act (House Bill 7 by Representative Jeff Leach, sponsored by Senator Hughes during the second special session) to combat lethal abortion pills illegally entering Texas, and the Life of the Mother Act (Senate Bill 31 by Senator Hughes) creating continued education for lawyers and their attorneys to ensure they properly treat pregnant women facing medical complications. She led key drafting efforts, coordinated dozens of hours of negotiations between Texas Right to Life, the medical lobby, and opponents who sought to weaken or defeat Pro-Life bills, and consistently ensured the bills remained strong, clear, and protective.

Corkhill also served as committee director for the Senate Committee on State Affairs, which is chaired by Senator Hughes. In this role, she managed hearings on dozens of Pro-Life bills, listened to countless hours of testimony, and successfully guided the Woman and Child Protection Act through committee four times until its ultimate passage. Her tireless work was essential to securing these landmark advancements for Life.

Other standout staffers include those in Senator Kelly Hancock’s office, especially Clark Garcia, and Representative Swanson’s team, including David Hinds and his colleagues. They worked hard to prepare powerful arguments and testimony in support of the Perinatal Palliative Care Act (Senate Bill 1233). Their diligence ensured Texas families whose preborn child is diagnosed with a life-threatening condition are informed of life-affirming resources like Abel Speaks.

We also commend Senator Phil King’s team, who never wavered in championing Senate Bill 1207, expanding adoption education in Texas schools. Their hard work will help to counter the stigma that contributes to women choosing abortion 50 to 1 over adoption nationwide.

These dedicated staffers, especially Caitriana Corkhill, are true hidden champions of the Pro-Life movement. Texas Right to Life thanks them for their unwavering leadership and courage even when few people are watching.
