A California congresswoman is facing backlash after comparing Republicans to “Klansmen” and calling for an abortion “underground railroad” in states that protect unborn children.
During a recent speech, California Representative Lateefah Simon criticized the Supreme Court, Republicans, and Pro-Life laws across the country.
“The Supreme Court is leading this country into the mud,” Simon said.
She went on to say, “The Democrats are out of touch, the Republicans are klansmen…”
But her most heartbreaking comments came when discussing abortion.
“There is over 20 states right now where women can’t access the right to abortion. We have to create underground railroads,” Lateefah said.
The phrase “underground railroad” is a reference to the network that helped enslaved people escape to freedom before the Civil War. Simon used the term to describe efforts to help women travel from Pro-Life states to states where abortion remains legal.
Her comments highlight just how far some abortion advocates are willing to go to promote the killing of babies in the womb.
Approximately 1.14 million abortions took place in the United States in 2024, according to the Guttmacher Institute. To put that number into perspective, that’s more people than the entire populations of Wyoming, Vermont, Alaska, North Dakota, or South Dakota.
Every year, over one million unborn children lose their lives to abortion.
Yet anti-Life advocates continue to argue that what America needs is easier access to kill babies.
But women don’t need an abortion underground railroad.

They need support, resources, and people around them telling them they can do this. Texas is full of pregnancy resource centers, adoption agencies, and maternity homes ready to be the encouragement mothers need.
Organizations like Planned Parenthood often present abortion as the solution to a difficult situation. But countless women have found that choosing Life brought blessings they never expected.
In fact, research from the Institute for Family Studies found that married mothers are twice as likely to describe themselves as “very happy” compared to women who are unmarried or childless.
Abortion also comes with risks that are rarely discussed by politicians advocating for expanded access.
Abortion pills now account for the majority of how preborn babies are killed in the United States. Recent research has raised concerns about the safety of chemical abortions. One study found that more than one in ten women experienced serious medical complications following a chemical abortion, a rate significantly higher than what has often been reported in public discussions.
Beyond the statistics and political talking points are real women facing difficult situations. The answer to their distress isn’t helping women end the lives of their children.
The answer is making sure they have the support, encouragement, and practical help they need to choose Life.
While some politicians call for abortion “underground railroads,” Pro-Life advocates continue working toward a different goal: building a culture where no woman feels abortion is her only option and every baby in the womb is valued.
