The abortion industry has long sold the lie that abortion is necessary for women’s empowerment. New research reveals a much darker reality: Abortion not only ends the life of a preborn child but may also seriously harm women’s physical health.
The Ethics and Public Policy Center recently released The Abortion Pill Harms Women, the largest-ever study on abortion drugs. The study reviewed 865,727 mifepristone abortions from 2017 to 2023 and followed HIPAA regulations.
Shockingly, the researchers found that serious negative events from the abortion pill happen about 22 times more than the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) reports. Within 45 days of having an abortion, about 1 in 9 women experienced serious or life-threatening problems like severe bleeding, infection, or sepsis. This is a huge difference from what the FDA’s current drug label says—that fewer than 1 in 200 women would face such issues—based on studies done more than 40 years ago.
Today, chemical abortions account for nearly two-thirds of all abortions in the United States, this could be close to 700,000 this year alone. The Ethics and Public Policy Center study indicates what Pro-Lifers have long warned: Women’s health is at far greater risk than the abortion industry admits due to these lethal drugs.

Under the Obama and Biden administrations, nearly all safety protocols on abortion pills were removed, except for those related to deaths.
For example, Georgia women Amber Thurman and Candi Miller suffered fatal complications after taking abortion pills, but Democrats and the media tried to blame their deaths on Pro-Life laws. Yet, had these women not taken the abortion pills, both they and their children would be alive. These are not isolated incidents but are among numerous other needless deaths that the abortion industry routinely downplays or ignores.
Abortion does not erase the circumstances that led a woman to seek it in the first place. Instead, it frequently compounds her trauma while endangering her health. Women who undergo abortions face significantly higher risks of future complications, including preterm birth in future pregnancies, mental health struggles such as depression and anxiety, and an increased likelihood of suicide. Researchers found that women who have abortions face an 81% increased risk of mental health problems, including a 34% higher risk of anxiety disorders and a 37% higher risk of depression.
Right now, Texas Right to Life estimates that 30,000 Texan babies are aborted each year. Many of these are due to out-of-state abortion travel and dangerous abortion drugs being mailed into Texas, which also puts mothers at risk. The new research from the Ethics and Public Policy Center highlights the true costs of abortion and the need for Texas not to abandon the fight for Life.
What can you do?
Texas lawmakers must pass Pro-Life bills before June 2 to save babies from illegal and out-of-state abortions:
- The Woman and Child Protection Act
SB 2880 by Senator Brian Hughes (R-Mineola) & HB 5510 by Representative Jeff Leach (R-Allen)
This bill will target illegal abortion pill distributors and traffickers. It also allows women and families to bring wrongful death lawsuits if harmed by abortion complications. - Stop Taxpayer-Funded Abortion Travel Act
SB 33 by Senator Donna Campbell (R-New Braunfels) & HB 1806 by Representative Candy Noble (R-Lucas)
This bill will stop city councils from paying for out-of-state abortion costs, like flights, hotel rooms, Uber rides, and more. Already, San Antonio and Austin have dedicated $500,000 combined to pay for abortion travel.
Contact state lawmakers:
Dear Representatives,
I kindly urge you to prioritize and pass the Woman and Child Protection Act (HB 5510/SB 2880) and the Stop Tax-Funded Abortion Travel Act (SB 33/HB 1806). Right now, there are still 30,000 preborn Texans killed each year due to abortion pills entering Texas and out-of-state abortion travel. These two measures must be passed immediately to give Texas new tools to stop abortion pill traffickers from mailing these lethal drugs into our state. They will also block liberal cities like Austin and San Antonio from using Texans’ tax money to fund out-of-state abortion travel.
Please stand for Life and protect mothers and babies from abortion by passing these bills immediately.
