“I think there’s a baby under the car,” a Fort Worth police officer shouted at the scene.
Officer Bounds and Sergeant Nichols’ next moves were nothing short of heroic.
They had just started their shift on October 23 when they saw the crash happen.
“It actually wasn’t a call. We were just driving down the highway, and the accident happened directly in front of me,” Bounds highlighted. “We just happened to be there at the time.”
The precious baby girl and her mother had been ejected from the vehicle, with the child pinned under the car.
Sergeant Nichols explained the terrifying moment they found her:
“She looked… I thought she was dead… but we’re not going to sit there and just do nothing. So we began to work, just praying on the inside that the Lord was going to just work the problem for us,” Nichols said. “You know, we all came together. Everybody was pitching in a hand. And slowly but surely, she came to.”
Officer Bounds said even now, the memory still shakes him.
“We go through a lot of training, scenario-based training, but nothing can really prepare you mentally for seeing a baby in that condition. It was hard at the time, and it’s hard today,” he said. “Just hearing that first little cry was the sweetest sound I could hear.”
Both officers, fathers themselves, said the experience hit especially close to home.
“You definitely go home and hug your babies a little tighter that night,” Bounds shared.

The rescue was not only a test of skill, but also a moment of deep faith. Nichols said that faith drives everything their department does.
“It’s a large part of our department and our officers… Faith drives every decision we do or don’t make out here. It drives how we treat people and the love we try to show to the community,” he said. “We’re not perfect, we’re a work in progress. We need grace as much as anybody else. But as you see in the video, Jason fixing her up — I’m just asking Jesus to work.”
As the officers performed CPR and fought to save the newborn’s life, Nichols said he believed God wasn’t done with the baby yet.
“Hopefully God’s not finished for them — and that’s exactly how I feel in the situation. He knew what was gonna come out; we just needed to be available for Him to use us.”
Then came the precious sound that changed everything.
“From the dad standpoint… when your child’s born and the doctor’s working and he finally starts crying and shows that sign of life, you’re like, okay, things are gonna be okay. That’s kind of how it hit. That baby breathed — and everyone else on the scene was able to take a breath. You can’t explain it.”
Officer Bounds and Sergeant Nichols treated this baby girl with the reverence due to every human life. Their humility and dependence on the Lord’s guidance in that critical moment show what it looks like to live out faith in action. Their story is a reminder that God still works miracles through ordinary people who make themselves available for His purpose — to defend and protect innocent Life.
