Lisa Robertson Opens Up About Her Abortion Story: She Wondered When Her “Glob of Tissue” Would Become A Baby

Lisa Robertson shared that as a teen, she was searching for love in all of the wrong places. This led her to become pregnant at 16 years old, resulting in an abortion.

Lisa and her husband Al are best known for their role on the faith and family reality show Duck Dynasty. They dated in high school but went their separate ways for a few years—a period during which Lisa’s abortion story and her journey to Christ unfolded. On Sadie Robertson Huff’s Whoa That’s Good podcast, Lisa shared her powerful testimony of abortion and finding forgiveness in Jesus.

“Whenever I found out I was pregnant, I was 16 years old, and I really didn’t go to church except for, you know, like, Easter, Christmas, you know, all of those celebratory times. I had nothing. And so I really didn’t feel like I should go to somebody at church and talk to them about my issue,” Lisa told her niece, Sadie Robertson Huff.

She then went on to explain how the only people in her life she could tell and receive advice from were her parents. “And my mom, you know, the words that she said to me was, she said, ‘You just need to get an abortion,’” Lisa shared.

“Well, I said, ‘I don’t know what that is.’ Nobody I’d ever known had done that before. And so she told me, she said, ‘Well, what’s in your body right now is just a glob of tissue, and all they’re going to do is go in there and take that glob of tissue out,’” she continued.

Lisa shared how since she was from a small, seemingly Christian town, she didn’t know about the horrors of abortion. However, there was something inside of her wondering if abortion was actually just the removal of “cells.”

“But, you know, I think back, even at 16, I had the thought, well, I wonder when it becomes a baby. If it’s just a glob of tissue now, how long does it take? So it was just that little idea in there that something didn’t add up, but I said okay, and that kind of fixed my problem,” she added.

Robertson openly shared her mindset during that time, which mirrors the thoughts of many women considering ending their baby’s life. At just 16 years old, Lisa believed no man would ever love her if she had a child. She thought having an abortion would be easy and something she could forget. Now, her message is directed at young women facing the same situation she once did.

“They told me was that after you leave here today, just forget this ever happened. Just go on, live your life, forget this day, and you’ll be okay,” Lisa said. “But I don’t think that’s possible for you to not remember that you’ve taken a life, you know. And at the time, you know, maybe I didn’t feel as though I was taking a life because they had all said this is just a glob of tissue. But I think there was something in the back of my mind that said, no, there’s something not right about what they’re telling you. And it’s true because it’s one of the most regretful things that I’d ever done.”

In the podcast, she and Al shared how, just a few years later, they found Christ and got married. Now, Lisa travels across the country, speaking at pregnancy centers, churches, and to post-abortive women, sharing her story and the freedom she has found in Jesus.

“I think one, is you’re trying to impress upon people…you don’t have to make the same mistakes that other people make to learn from that. Because what we would much rather, is that people make better decisions and don’t have to go through that — don’t have to carry that pain,” Al said. “The other thing is you want to offer hope to people who are in bad situations.”

We are grateful for the resources available to women seeking forgiveness and healing in Christ after an abortion. Organizations like Sisters of Life, Project Rachel, and many Texas pregnancy centers provide counseling and hope to those on their journey to healing.
