For over a year, Democrats, the FBI, and Department of Justice failed to respond to hundreds of politically-motivated crimes on Pro-Life churches, groups, and pregnancy centers. Now with control of the House of Representatives, Republicans in Congress passed a resolution this week condemning the attacks and voted to form a new subcommittee investigating the weaponization of the FBI and Department of Justice.
Pro-Life organizations have faced vandalism, arson, and harassment since the 2021 enactment of the Texas Heartbeat Act. Threats of violence and intimidation increased nationwide after a draft opinion leaked from the Supreme Court last May indicating the impending reversal of Roe v. Wade. Even as Texas Right to Life endured three bomb threats, vandalism, and millions of attempted (but failed) cyberattacks, the FBI and Department of Justice neglected to hold the actors accountable.
U.S. Reps. Chris Smith, R-New Jersey, and Mike Johnson, R-Louisiana, introduced the measure condemning the violence and urges the U.S. Department of Justice to investigate the attacks. The recent resolution passed by a 222-208 vote, with every Republican voting for it and all but three Democrats voting against.
Meanwhile, as federal officials ignore crimes targeting Pro-Life organizations, the FBI and DOJ have abused their resources to arrest dozens of Pro-Life advocates for peacefully protesting abortion.
House Republicans therefore voted this week to form a subcommittee chaired by Pro-Life Representative Jim Jordan to investigate the weaponization of federal law enforcement. The Select Subcommittee on the Weaponization of the Federal Government was passed with a vote of 221-211, with all Republicans voting for it and all Democrats voting against.
The panel will review how the executive branch has investigated and collected information on American citizens and determine how federal officials worked with other bodies, including private sector companies, to “facilitate action against American citizens.”
The subcommittee will submit a final report by January 2, 2025, after “a full and complete investigation and study.” The subcommittee will have subpoena power.
The House’s actions highlight a failure by Democrats, the FBI, and the Department of Justice to adequately respond to politically-motivated crimes while abusing the authority of law enforcement for their own political purposes.
