The United Way was recently exposed as a source of substantial contributions to Planned Parenthood. The organization gives about $2M per year to Planned Parenthood through local chapter grants. Each individual chapter can decide whether or not to contribute to Planned Parenthood. In Texas, Fort Worth’s Tarrant County United Way (Texas’ only Planned Parenthood-affiliated chapter) contributed $9,354.00 to Planned Parenthood of North Texas, according to the group’s 990 from 2014.
Last month, United Way told the Daily Signal that individual United Ways determine how to disseminate funding “based on an assessment of local needs.” However, all of the non-abortion services offered at Planned Parenthood facilities can be obtained elsewhere, regardless of locale. Pro-Lifers are therefore urging the Tarrant County United Way to sever their partnership with the embattled abortion conglomerate and redirect valuable funding to community resources that can help women and families without the anti-Life agenda of Planned Parenthood.
Students for Life of America has partnered with other Pro-Life organizations to urge Americans to boycott the United Way until their 67 Planned Parenthood-funding chapters redirect funding to worthy causes. According to John-Henry Westen, a boycott leader:
Any money whatsoever going to Planned Parenthood contributes to the more than 327,000 abortions they commit every year and the harvesting and selling of the body parts of aborted babies,” said Hawkins. “If organizations refuse to stop funding Planned Parenthood, they are complicit in what Planned Parenthood is doing. What generous donor will continue to fund groups who support the nation’s largest abortion chain, one which has been caught on tape haggling over the price of the body parts of aborted children?
Westen noted that Planned Parenthood funding is fungible. This means that, while the money will not (in theory) be used to fund the fees for the abortion, the money can legally and effortlessly be used for overhead costs, including the electricity that powers the vacuum aspirator machine used to abort babies, the water that is used to rinse the baby’s body when researchers are hunting for saleable baby parts, etc. To fund Planned Parenthood is to fund their abortion operations and the horrific activities tied to the abortion act (such as the harvesting and sale of fetal body parts). To “charitably” fund Planned Parenthood means that their profit is bumped up yet another notch.
This must stop. And, as we have done so many times before, Texas can lead the way in defunding this revenue stream to Planned Parenthood. You can help to ensure that United Way of Metropolitan Tarrant County is the first United Way to stop funding Planned Parenthood. Go to the Boycott United Way page to take action. Then share the news with your friends and family via social media. Finally, urge every single presidential candidate to stand firm against the inhumane, barbaric, and anti-American practices of the nation’s largest perpetrator of abortion.
