Following news that abortion radicals are attempting to force the removal of the life-saving Hyde Amendment, the notorious House Speaker Nancy Pelosi attempted to use her Catholic faith to defend her anti-Life position. Instead of condemning the removal of the Hyde Amendment, Pelosi doubled down on her radical pro-abortion position and wrongly claimed that killing preborn babies improves women’s health.
Pelosi said ending the lives of preborn babies was “an issue of health of many women in America.” For years, the abortion industry has moved away from the rhetoric of keeping abortion “rare” and tried to wrongly present abortion as health care. The reality is that abortion is the intentional, violent destruction of an innocent human life, and abortion is never necessary to save a mother’s life.
Pelosi then disingenuously used her self-proclaimed faith as a shield. She stated, “As a devout Catholic and mother of five in six years, I feel that God blessed my husband and me with our beautiful family – five children in six years almost to the day. But that may not be what we should – and it’s not up to me to dictate that that’s what other people should do…” In her statement, Pelosi implies that she takes the teachings on faith and morals of the Catholic Church seriously, and yet the Catholic Church is unequivocally opposed to abortion and the destruction of innocent human Life. Apart from taxpayer funding of this evil, the Church has never condoned abortion as health care or pretended that abortion is anything other than the gruesome reality elective abortion truly is.
Pelosi also implies but does not outright state the line that pro-abortion would-be Catholics have used for decades. Many politicians try to skirt the serious moral issue of abortion by stating that they are personally opposed to abortion but cannot “impose their views” on others. This is a nonsensical position, because if you truly recognize abortion as the taking of an innocent human life, you cannot ignore the bloodshed and injustice with a shrug of the shoulder and the excuse that other people can choose to do what they want.
This philosophically inconsistent “personally opposed but politically anti-Life” position is one Pelosi and Joe Biden have leaned on for the many decades of their political careers. Recently, however, both have cowed to increasing pressure from the Woke Left to endorse more radical positions. Biden maintained unwavering support for the Hyde Amendment as a matter of conscience protections to ensure that Pro-Life taxpayers are not forced directly to fund the elective abortions of others through the federal Medicaid program.
Just as Biden has capitulated to the abortion hysteria of the Left, Pelosi is now driving an increasingly radical anti-Life agenda in the House, claiming that removing the Hyde Amendment has been a priority for a long time.
Disturbingly, Pelosi endorses a eugenic argument when she said that abortion is “an issue of fairness and justice for poorer women in our country.” The abortion industry was founded on eugenics, and many people fail to realize that eugenics continue to motivate the slaughter of the innocent preborn. Some lives are viewed as less valuable and less worthy, whether because of suspected disability or because of potentially being born into poverty. For Pelosi, being poor means that babies have an obligation to be killed in abortion as a matter of “fairness and justice.”
This is not the first time Pelosi has brought up her Catholic faith to justify support for abortion. Her political pandering is inexcusable and misleading. Catholic bishops have urgently tried to ensure that anti-Life politicians are denied Communion because of their obstinate refusal to accept Church teaching. The scandal of anti-Life politicians posturing in their faith creates confusion and division among Christian communities. On the issue of Life, all followers of Christ must be united in defending the defenseless and standing for the Sanctity of Human Life.
