Dennis Bonnen announced he will not seek re-election as speaker of the Texas House nor as state representative for Angleton following a fiery quid pro quo scandal which is now in the hands of law enforcement. The timeline of his exit is unclear; the terms of his departure are being negotiated with various law enforcement agencies.
After betraying conservatives in the Regular Session of the 86th Texas Legislature, Bonnen came under fire when Michael Quinn Sullivan, CEO of Empower Texans, revealed the speaker attempted to bribe him with media credentials for targeting a specific list of Republican House members in the 2020 election cycle with his PAC (Sullivan rejected the offer verbally and again later in a formal letter).
Since then, hundreds of grassroots activists asked their state representatives to demand Bonnen’s resignation, especially before the Texas House Republican Caucus meeting held last Friday in which Bonnen’s lackeys insisted on the corrupt speaker’s continued tenure. Thanks to diligent conservative activists, however, enough representatives withdrew their support from Bonnen that he could no longer survive the political pressure. Bonnen will not seek re-election in 2020 nor as House speaker in 2021.
Through his duplicitous leadership during the session and his recorded unethical behavior after the session, Dennis Bonnen substantially weakened the entire conservative movement in Texas. The responsibility to restore trust among Republican voters and conservative activists rests with Governor Greg Abbott and Lieutenant Governor Dan Patrick. The way to win back voters is to call a special session of the Legislature and pass the Lone Star Agenda under new leadership of the Texas House—leadership that would finally be free from blighted self-preservation of the last decade. Both Governor Abbott and Lieutenant Governor Patrick have manifested such boldness at various times during their political tenures. If they fail to muster that type of courage and leadership again now—when Texas is clamoring for real valor and freedom fighters—and when the Texas House is no longer an obstacle—they could lose Texas voters.
Be the heroes we need, Governor Abbott and Lieutenant Governor Patrick; call the Legislature back to protect Life and liberty under new leadership.
We must prepare for the upcoming battle, but we must also take time to celebrate and give thanks for this victory against the unholy rot of the GOP establishment. Texas Right to Life will honor conservative activists like you this Saturday – because you made this victory possible. Join us at the North Texas Celebration of Life in Dallas on October 26 with keynote speaker Honorable Jonathan Stickland.

Dennis Bonnen’s duplicity, manipulation, and apathy served as a major roadblock to abolishing abortion and euthanasia. In the end, our war is not against flesh and blood but “against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly realms.” (Ephesians 6:12). Join us to celebrate his departure as a victory and prepare for the impending battles we must face together.
